At SIGGRAPH 2004, MAXON Computer released the 9th generation of CINEMA 4D, its modeling, and animation tool.

In addition to new modeling tools and enhanced workflow, more than 100 new functions and features make this upgrade one of the most impressive in
MAXON history.

As part of a continual focus on improving ease-of-use, Release 9 development has focused on refining many areas of the program as well as adding impressive new features such as cloth simulation, sub-polygon displacement, N-Gons and much more.

Many of the new features of Release 9 can be found within the core application, which offers an entry-level price point. Additional modules can be purchased to maximize each users performance and fit their budget.

A completely re-engineered modeling core now includes full N-Gon support and additional tools to make modeling easier and faster. Using N-Gons, users can easily create complete models based on polygons with any number of points. An upgraded modeling toolset now includes improved polygon knitting and stitching. As well as a brush tool that allows users to paint point deformations on a model.

An even more intuitive interface now includes the HeadsUpDisplay (HUD), which displays freely configurable information directly in the editor as well as dynamic highlights to preview mode before they are executed. As the HUD can display virtually any function within the editor, users can soon make the most of their workspace and adapt their interface to a full screen editor while still having all the tools they use at their disposal.

Character animators will especially appreciate the enhanced MOCCA module.
The new Clothilde functions now make it easy to add clothing to characters as well as simulate any type of cloth. Cloth dynamics ensure accurate collision detection and as the engine has been made specifically for simulating cloth, it's extremely fast. Hard-IK now offers more kinematics mode for perfect character motion. Furthermore, Motion Blending will improve workflow tremendously as different motions can simply be blended into each other. When used in conjunction with the extended FBX support, this feature makes it easy to capture simple motion and crate complex animations. This complete cloth dynamics system has been designed specifically to ensure fast collision detection.

Last, but not least the Advanced Render module has been enhanced as well.
Advanced Render already boasts some of the most advanced rendering features available, including HDRI, Global Illumination, and Subsurface Scattering.

In addition to these features, CINEMA 4D R9 includes Sub-Polygon Displacement. Unlike normal displacement, which requires fine geometry to highlight texture detail, SPD uses optimized algorithms to generate more details during rendering. The results are shorter render times, lower memory consumption and more exciting images. In addition to its support for Adobe's After Effects, CINEMA 4D now includes direct export of multipass rendering data to discreet's Combustion compositing application and Apple's Final Cut Pro editing system.
