Siggraph Events
Discreet, a division of Autodesk Inc., announced that it will be hosting client demos by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Ring of Fire, Frantic Films, KD LAB, Zoic Studios, Dreamscape Images Uncharted Territory, Production IG, The Orphanage and Robot at the 2004 SIGGRAPH Conference being held in Los Angeles from August 10 – 12, 2004. SIGGRAPH attendees are invited to these demos, being held at Discreet’s SIGGRAPH booth (#1700), to gain insight on groundbreaking post-production work realized by some of the industry’s greatest talent.
Mark Casey, compositing supervisor for ILM, will be demonstrating sequences from summer blockbuster feature film The Bourne Supremacy. ILM used Discreet's inferno and flame systems, as part of its proprietary SABRE visual effects and compositing system, on key action-packed scenes. The final high-speed car chase through Moscow was one of many scenes performed by a stunt double driving an unmanned camera trailer. Foregrounds were shot on a Berlin soundstage against green screens. Reflections on the windshield and dirt texture on the glass of the car were later added. To tackle the complexity and detail of these scenes, ILM relied extensively on Discreet's latest keying technology and color correction capabilities.
Chris Bond, president of Frantic Films, along with Borislav Petrov, will be taking the audience through a comprehensive breakdown of scenes from Catwoman and "Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed," which were recently completed using Discreet's 3ds max animation software. Frantic Films used 3ds max software for previsualization of approximately 1,500 shots for "Catwoman" starring Halle Berry. Frantic Films also used 3ds max to craft CG elements for the film’s nightclub scene in which "Catwoman" steals a whip from a dancer in order to intimidate a bully. Due to safety reasons, a real whip could not be employed and thus, a 3D whip was created in 3ds max.
KD LAB, a New York City-based studio focusing on design, direction, and production, will demonstrate the making of Nike's new ad campaign "Les Jumelles" ("The Twins"), scheduled to air during the Summer Olympics. The scenes were shot against bluescreens and footage was then composited into digital environments created with Discreet’s 3ds max software.
Joseph Kosinski, co-founder of KDLAB and director of "Les Jumelles," commented, “3ds max allows you to take your ideas and turn them into reality without compromise. KDLAB is looking forward to sharing our recent work with SIGGRAPH attendees at the Discreet booth.”
Dreamscape Images Uncharted Territory will reveal the making of scenes from the weather-gone-wild movie "The Day After Tomorrow," by Director Roland Emmerich. Adam Watkins, lead animator, will demonstrate the making of computer-generated frost, snow and ice created in Discreet’s 3ds max software – a task that was completed in only three months.
